Autism Parenting Coaching Built Around Your Whole Family
A Different Kind of Support for Parents Raising an Autistic Child
(Because You Deserve Support, Too)
Most autism support in the Columbia area is built around ABA therapy for your child, with parent training folded in as an add-on. That leaves a gap for parents who want dedicated support of their own, whether or not their child is currently in therapy. At Wellness Space Counseling, autism parenting coaching stands on its own.
The program is led by Mark Wilson, LMSW, a licensed clinician and International Coaching Federation (ICF) Certified Coach. Mark brings both clinical training and personal experience to every session, giving families a coach who understands the caregiving journey from more than one angle.
What Is Autism Caregiver Training?
Autism caregiver training is dedicated, one-on-one support that helps parents understand their child's sensory needs, communication style, and behavior so they can respond in ways that build connection instead of conflict. It's separate from your child's own therapy for children or family therapy, and it pairs naturally with our ADHD Parent Coaching program for families navigating more than one neurodivergent profile.
According to the CDC, early intervention services can meaningfully improve a child's development, and the parents around that child play a central role in how those gains carry into daily life.
How Autism Parenting Training Supports Your Whole Family
Parenting an autistic child comes with its own learning curve: sensory needs, communication differences, meltdowns that aren’t easily resolved with typical de-escalation strategies, and a school system that doesn't always make sense. Together, we'll build a toolkit that respects your child's autistic identity rather than trying to change it.
Understand your child's sensory sensitivities and reduce triggers before meltdowns occur
Navigate unexpected changes and transitions with more ease
Build a visual schedule and home routine that supports predictability
Feel more confident advocating for your child's IEP and school supports
Process your own stress, overwhelm, or adjustment around a recent autism diagnosis
Strengthen connection with your child through play-based, child-led interaction
Autism Parenting Coaching Can Help You:
Five Neurodiversity-Affirming Approaches Behind Our Coaching
Research on DIR/Floortime, including a randomized controlled trial published in PMC, points to gains in social-emotional development through this relationship-based, play-led approach. It's one of five approaches woven into our coaching:
DIR/Floortime (PRIDE method): Child-led, play-based interaction that meets your child at their developmental level and builds connection without forcing neurotypical norms
Collaborative & Proactive Solutions (CPS): Frames behaviors as unsolved problems or lagging skills, involving your child in calm, proactive problem-solving
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) for Parents: Supports your own mental health by helping you manage burnout and practice self-compassion
Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT): Structured coaching using elements of PCIT to adapt the environment, set routines, and use positive reinforcement
Emotion-Focused Family Therapy (EFFT): Teaches you to validate intense emotions and co-regulate during sensory overload

Speech therapy, early childhood intervention, and play-based approaches all help develop an individualized plan for a child's social development. Parents can help most day-to-day by following their child's lead, working closely with their child's doctor and support team, and using visual tools that make transitions easier.

You Don’t Have to Navigate This Alone
Raising an autistic child comes with a learning curve that no one fully prepares you for, and it's easy to feel like you're managing it in isolation, especially between appointments, IEP meetings, and everyone else's opinions about what your child needs. You don't have to carry that alone. With neurodiversity-affirming coaching built specifically for parents, you'll have dedicated support that respects your child's identity and your family's pace.
